Caitlin Maisri Murray was the sixth child and fourth daughter of Ian and Jenny Murray. She died shortly after being born.

Personal History

On December 2, 1749, English soldiers came to Lallybroch, likely to harass its inhabitants. The next day, Jenny delivered her child, who lived no more than a day. They called her Caitlin Maisri.

Voyager

Jamie Fraser hears his sister's screams as she endures the pains of labor with her seventh child, and recalls wee Caitlin, Jenny's sixth, who had died the same day she was born, three years earlier. He wonders if things might have been different if the Redcoats hadn't come, or if there had been more food to sustain the family.

Name

  • Caitlin is an Irish form of Cateline, which was an Old French form of Katherine.[1][2] One possible derivation of Katherine is the Greek ‘εκατερος (hekateros) "each of the two." In the early Christian era it became associated with Greek καθαρος (katharos) "pure."[3]
  • Maisri is probably an invented name, formed using elements from similar-sounding Scottish names such as Maisie,[4] Mairead,[5] Marsaili[6] and Màiri.[7][8]
  • Murray is derived from the region in Scotland called Moray meaning "seaboard settlement".[9]
