Cranesmuir is a fictional village located in the Scottish highlands. It is the closest village to Castle Leoch. It was the home of Geillis Duncan where she lived with her husband Arthur Duncan. In the Outlander Series, Cranesmuir serves as the location for several important events and plotlines.
History[]
Cranesmuir probably developed as the nearby castle did, housing the parish church and various local authorities.
Layout[]
Cranesmuir's high street runs from the kirk to the town square. The high street contains the large homes, businesses, and shops. Directly parallel to the high street is St. Margaret's Lane, which is "tenanted by smithy, tannery, and the less genteel artisans and businesses." Several lanes of cottages lead off the village square.[1]
Claire likens the layout of the village to a hand, with the square as the palm, the two major streets as the forearm, and the cottages as the fingers.
Locations within Cranesmuir[]
The Fiscal's House[]
Geillis and her husband live in a half-timbered manor house with leaded windows. In Cross Stitch it is 3 stories high, whereas in Outlander it is 4 stories high.
The Thieves Hole[]
The thieves' hole, which was usually the most wretched part of a prison cell,[2] has a small opening and earthen walls, with a foul, penetrating stench throughout.
