Duncan Kerr was a tacksman of clan MacKenzie who escaped to France after the Jacobite Rising of 1745. In 1755, he appears in the far north of Scotland near Ardsmuir Prison, where Jamie Fraser is held prisoner.

Name
- Duncan is the anglicized form of the Gaelic name Donnchadh meaning "brown warrior" or "dark-skinned warrior", derived from Gaelic donn "brown" and cath "warrior".[1][2]
- Kerr was a topographic name for someone who lived by a patch of wet ground overgrown with brushwood, northern Middle English kerr (Old Norse kjarr).[3]
