Elias Pound was a midshipman aboard the Porpoise. He died on the ship during an outbreak of typhoid fever.
Elias started his career at sea when he was just seven years old, joining his uncle aboard the Triton.

Elias is a midshipman on the Porpoise, a British man-of-war, when a deadly sickness breaks out, decimating the crew within weeks. He is charged with assisting Claire Fraser, a woman surgeon pressed into service from a merchant ship, while she attempts to halt the spread of the disease. Ultimately he succumbs to the disease himself, dying in Claire's arms.

- Elias is a cognate with Elijah, from the Hebrew name אֱלִיָּהוּ ('Eliyyahu) meaning "my God is YAHWEH".
- Pound was a topographic name for someone who lived near an enclosure in which animals were kept, or a metonymic occupational name for an official responsible for rounding up stray animals and placing them in a pound, from Middle English p(o)und "enclosure (especially for confining animals)".
