Joseph Wemyss is the father of Lizzie Wemyss. He sold her as an indentured servant to Brianna Fraser in order to save her from being indentured to a man who would make her his concubine. Joseph eventually reunites with his daughter in the Colony of North Carolina, and settles with her on Fraser's Ridge.
Joseph was a bookkeeper in Scotland before his circumstances obliged him to sell himself and his daughter into indentured servitude. In North Carolina, he reunites with his daughter, who was indentured to Brianna Fraser, and Jamie Fraser secures his indenture, then quickly frees him from the contract. Returning with his daughter to Fraser's Ridge, Joseph is provided a freeman's homestead claim of fifty acres, which adjoins the land provided in Lizzie's dowry.
