Lord John SeriesEdit

"Lord John and the Haunted Soldier"Edit

As he explains to Lord John Grey, Marcus had fallen in love with Anne Thackeray, who in turn had also shown favor to Philip Lister. In his attempt to try and kill Lister, Marcus had arranged for an "accident" to occur with the powder from his mill that would result in Lister's death. This plan, however, backfired, and left Marcus himself horribly disfigured. After the accident, Anne no longer showed interest in Marcus and ran away instead with Philip when he joined the army.

Marcus kept tabs on Anne after she left with Lister and continued to speak with her father, Reverend Thackeray. As Anne slipped deeper into debt after her family disowned her and Lister died, Marcus started to buy the jewelry that Anne pawned, in his mind planning to safeguard the heirlooms to give back to her. Upon learning that she had a child by Lister and following her death, Marcus took the child, eventually leaving the child with Lord John before committing suicide with one of his own bombs.
