  • To address something I'm trying to get better at myself... Before making edits to many pages with the intent of reworking a layout (like you did a few days ago with a number of character pages), I think such a suggestion should be put to the active members of the wiki in order to arrive at a consensus. (In retrospect, this is the real issue I had with the tabview edits last month – it wasn't a matter of "approval" by an admin, but rather one of consensus for major changes to the wiki. Hard to distinguish between the two when there's just one active admin and one active user, but I think the difference is crucial.) If we had more active users, I would post this in the forum, but since at the moment it's just you and me...

I was on vacation the past few days, but if we had discussed the intended changes beforehand, I would have said that the new layout (distinguishing between novel and novella summaries) is good in theory, but doing so at the heading level looks a bit clunky and repetitive (e.g. seeing "Events of the" multiple times in a row on Jamie's TOC). Further, there are a few reasons why I'm not a fan of having "Novellas" at the heading level, but the most pertinent one is that the "Lord John" heading includes all novels and novellas in that series. Consistency would dictate that all "Outlander" novels and novellas be included under one heading as well.

And so, in the spirit of collaboration – a word in the definition of "wiki" to be sure! – I propose that we dispense with "Events of the" altogether, and simply use "Outlander Series" and/or "Lord John Series" at the heading level, with specific titles at the 1st sub-heading level or using tabber. (In fact, the Lord John Grey page has had this layout for some time.) For characters that appear in an Outlander novella (that is, any title listed on this page), the novella should be included under the "Outlander Series" heading, in its proper chronological place. If the novella is not yet published, it should be the last sub-heading or tab, whichever is being used in the page's layout.

I went ahead and changed a couple of pages to demonstrate my proposal:

Appending (novella) in each case seems appropriate to me, to distinguish it from the main "big books". On the other hand, more than half the LJ series is novellas, so I think adding (novella) to each of those under the LJ heading would be a bit much/unnecessary.

Let me know what you think, and we can go forward from there.

    • Alex,

Sounds good. I honestly didn't really think as I did it. I wanted to try and see how it could look on various layouts based on how many of what series a character has appeared in. I do agree that with the Novella's it's best to keep them in one of the series either LJG or Outlander as the novellas are categorized by being in one of those two on Diana's page. We can either keep using both the " " around the title of the novella and (novella) after the title. Or just decide to keep with one of them. With that so many of the LJG series are novellas would it be better to use the quotes around the title so it doesn't get cluttered/clunky looking.

  • The Character template has been updated so that any character that has "Catholic", "Protestant", "Presbyterian", "Anglican", or "Methodist" will automatically link to the appropriate category. I can add more if we need to, or if it's an odd case (like Percy's) then the link can be manually added. This way, there are fewer menial edits for us to do.

  • I don't like to pull rank, but can you confer with me in the future about doing a major overhaul of a page like you've done with Lord John Grey? I haven't been keen on using tabview because of layout issues, like this:

    Tabview-issue

And until I can figure out how to amend the underlying code to fix the problem, I don't want to add tabview to pages – tabber should be used instead, when needed.

    Thanks,

    Alex

    • Fair enough. It does make things look off from the Outlander Series section. My thought with the tabview was that given he's in so many books that putting everything into his page look at the source code it becomes its own novel. And I was doing an update on Private Matter that was going to be longer than the very general 1 paragraph that was already there. And Thought given this tabview is used on other major characters, ie Jamie, and Claire, it could be beneficial on his page. It just lines up easier on their pages with the length of their Personal Histories vs John's. I can easily undo the change and just past the private Matter details into his over all page from the subpage.

    • There's no question of the usefulness of tabview in the source mode; much easier to navigate without the long summaries in there. No need to undo anything, I just think from this point on, hold off on "updating" pages to use tabview.

I changed the code for tabber so that the ugly page break thing doesn't happen (though this is only a problem when Template:Scroll is used), but tabview is an entirely different beast and I haven't figured out how to make it work the way I want to.

    • Alright. Well John was the only person I thought tabview might benefit that didn't already use it. But I'll refrain from its' use on any further pages till you say otherwise.

  • I've been proofreading some of your recent edits, and noticed that for some of the episode plot summaries, you copied and pasted them from IMDB. Please do not copy content for this wiki from another website, unless it is explicitly licensed under a Creative Commons license (like content from Wikipedia). I would prefer that most of the written content of this wiki be original, and don't want to risk infringing another website's copyright. Thanks.

  • Can you hold off on the minor characters page for MOHB? I have them all in a spreadsheet, just haven't got round to doing the page yet.
