Jamie finds himself between a rock and a hard place when a redcoat deserter from his past resurfaces. Claire tends to a laboring Jenny while Jamie and Ian join The Watch, resulting in devastating consequences.
Life is anything but simple for Jamie and Claire when members of the Watch arrive for one of their regular visits. The Watch essentially protects the locals from the British, but for a price. Jamie thinks they're no better than thieves, but Ian assures him they're the closest thing to an army that they have. Jamie is posing as a visitor but his secret is put at risk when a Redcoat deserter from his past, Horrocks, arrives he finds himself being blackmailed. Having dealt with his blackmailer, Jamie has little choice but to join the Watch. Jenny meanwhile, goes into labor and with the village midwife away, Claire will have to deliver the baby in what becomes a difficult birth.
